As a professor and author in the field of mental health for over 25 years, I have spent my career researching how to do this work well.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this journey has been discovering that not only are there much easier ways to facilitate change but the research clearly supports these more streamlined and focused methods.

Without a doubt, our profession is on the cusp of a radical evolution that will meaningfully increase our ability to help clients, quickly and compassionately.

More about: Dr. Diane Gehart is Professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling Programs at California State University, Northridge, and the Director of the Institute for Therapy that Works. She has authored numerous titles including Mindfulness for Chocolate Lovers: A Lighthearted Way to Stress Less and Savor More Each Day, Mindfulness and Acceptance in Couple and Family Therapy, Mastering Competencies in Family Therapy, and Theory and Treatment Planning in Counseling and Psychotherapy.

Course Description

Have you ever noticed that some mental health practitioners seem to be better than others? Researchers have finally begun to identify the characteristics and skills that distinguish highly effective practitioners. In this workshop, you will learn (a) the counter-intuitive findings of the latest research on clinician effects, (b) essential skills and qualities that characterize better-than-average clinicians, and (c) how to start your journey to becoming extraordinary.

Who's Invited?

This course is designed for mental health professionals, although anyone who wants to know how to form more effective professional helping relationships is welcome to join, including medical professionals, school professionals, coaches, consultants, managers, and mediators. This latest research is applicable to all of us who try to facilitate change and improvement in others.

Course Goal

At the end of the program, participants will better understand the implications of clinician effects on therapeutic outcomes and how to cultivate these core competencies into their practice and daily lives.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify 3 core competencies associated with clinicians who consistently have better-than-average outcomes.
  2. Explain at least 2 factors required for creating a highly effective therapeutic alliance with a diverse range of clients. 
  3. Identify at least 2 personal characteristics that highly effective clinicians tend to possess.

CE Approval: This course has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education by the NBCC and CAMFT.
